Tree Bark Rubbings

Looking for a hands-on nature activity for kids that blends science and art? Try making tree bark texture rubbings! This simple outdoor craft encourages observation, develops fine motor skills, and helps children explore the beauty of texture found in nature.

This activity encourages:

  • Scientific observation (tree anatomy, ecosystems)

  • Art exploration (the element of texture)

  • Sensory engagement (touch, sight, fine motor skills)

  • Creative expression (color mixing and watercolor overlays)

Tree bark rubbings are an easy way to explore your local environment, combine subjects like art and science, and enjoy meaningful time outdoors with your kids.

Read on to see how we made them.

Supplies:

  • A tree

  • Crayons in a variety of colors (peel the wrappers!)

  • Kraft paper or large drawing paper

  • Tape (masking or painter’s tape works best)

  • Optional: Watercolor paints and paintbrushes

Directions:

  • Wrap kraft paper around the trunk of a tree. Use tape to secure it in place so it doesn’t slip during the rubbing.

  • Choose a crayon and hold it sideways. Rub it gently but firmly over the surface of the paper to pick up the tree’s texture.

  • Experiment with different colors or switch trees to compare textures!

  • Optional: Once your rubbing is complete and the paper is removed, paint over the white spaces with watercolor. The wax from the crayons will resist the paint, revealing a beautiful layered effect. This step adds a pop of color and makes the piece even more eye-catching.

Tip: Want to take the learning further? Compare bark textures from different types
of trees.
