Paper Bag Nature Journals
Nature journals are a beautiful tool for helping children slow down, observe, and connect with the world around them. Whether your child is sketching a bird they saw on a morning walk or gluing in a pressed flower, journaling builds a deeper relationship with nature.
This DIY nature journal for kids is made with paper lunch bags and string, making it an eco-friendly, low-cost craft perfect for homeschoolers, nature-based learning, and forest school-style activities. No fancy materials required—just creativity, curiosity, and a little time outdoors.
Read on to see how we made them.

Supplies:
4–5 paper lunch bags
2 feet of string or yarn
Hole punch
Scissors
Markers, crayons, or stickers for decorating
Rubber band (to keep the journal closed)
Directions:
Create your journal pages. Stack 4–5 paper lunch bags on top of each other and fold the stack in half the hamburger way (side to side).
Punch holes. Use a hole punch to make two holes along the folded edge.
Bind with string. Thread your yarn or string through the holes and tie securely in a knot. Trim any excess.
Decorate your cover. Use crayons, markers, or stickers to make your journal uniquely yours.
Add a rubber band. Stretch a rubber band around the closed journal to keep it secure when not in use.
