Leaf Prints

Looking for a simple, low-mess nature craft for kids?

These beautiful leaf prints are the perfect way to turn an afternoon outdoors into a creative, calming art activity. All you need are fresh leaves, markers, paper, and a little water to create vibrant, one-of-a-kind nature art.

This easy leaf art project encourages children to engage with the natural environment and is ideal for outdoor classrooms, homeschool nature study, or your next forest school session.

Children are naturally curious and deeply connected to their surroundings. Leaf printing gives them a chance to explore nature up close while expressing themselves creatively. It’s an excellent sensory and seasonal activity that works in any weather and with all ages.

Read on to see how we made them.

Supplies:

  • Soft, fresh leaves (the greener and softer, the better!)

  • Heavy drawing paper or cardstock

  • Washable markers

  • Spray bottle filled with water

Directions:

  • Collect fresh leaves from your backyard, park, or nature walk. Softer leaves work best for this art project.

  • Use washable markers to gently color the vein side of the leaf.

  • Lightly mist your paper with water using a spray bottle. This helps the ink transfer better.

  • Place the colored side of the leaf face down onto the damp paper. Press gently but firmly.

  • Slowly peel back the leaf to reveal your nature-inspired print.

  • Allow your leaf art to dry completely before displaying.

Tip: If your print is too runny, try pressing the leaf onto a dry sheet of paper without adding more water or marker.
